STEM Learning with Mrs Carvalho
STEM incorporates science, technology, engineering and math. Using our science program, STEMscopes, students will investigate the areas of life science, earth science, and physical science. Our new math series, GOMath, aligns with the Common Core Standards for teaching and learning. In math students will explore operations and algebraic thinking, numbers and operations in base ten, numbers and operations with fractions, measurement and data, and geometry. Both series allow for hands-on, mind-on, active and engaged learning.
Homework
Math is a cumulative process, where learning builds steadily. Skills are often reinforced through nightly homework in the form of facts practice, on-line practice, and written work. All these formats help students meet the expectations to acquire and apply mathematical skills. Fluency in math facts is important as students move through problem solving activities. For this reason , I ask that your child practice math facts 5 to 10 minutes a day. This can be done independently, but is often more successful when done with someone who can encourage them along the way.
Independent interactive practice for math is available on line 24/7 outside of the school day. Please refer to the information sticker provided by our Technology Teacher, Mrs. Ashley, for username and password. Children will have access to our district programs GoMath and Reflex Math, as well as others as the year progresses.
All assignments will be noted in your child’s agenda; please check it daily. I also ask that you sign the agenda as a form of daily communication with me. Although simple, this task lets your child know that we are working together to help them do their best in school.
